What I want candidates to understand is, it is their responsibility to earn the position, is not their given right. That when they are called for an interview, they don't automatically have the position, it is their time to impress and win the position. I've come upon street artists before (music, painting, etc.)  I've watched them sometimes from a distance and noticed that no one paid any attention to them.  However, when they're good, I've made it a point to stop in front of them and noticeably pay rapt attention.  Slowly, others will stop.  Then more.  Then more.  I love the feeling of leaving them with an audience. I remember reading about Napoleon Hill, I think, who did his work for free during the Great Depression, yet added tremendous value for years to come.  It's key that you study the business/es that you want to work for, learn what kind of problems are pressing for them, and then design solutions you can implement for them.
