I get it! I bought a Jaguar a couple of months ago, and decided to wait a while to tell my parents. They have helped me so much over the years, and I didn't know how to show them my nice car. I finally decided that it was time. I worked up the courage, and called my mom. She was surprised and happy. The next day, I told my brother that I finally told my parents. He laughed at me. He said, "Mom already knew, you posted a picture on Facebook, our cousin Mike told his mother, and Aunt Jane told Mom two months ago."

So I agree, you shouldn't post anything you don't want to be made public!!!

I also run a staffing firm and what brought this subject up is our internal applicant tracking software has added on a new feature that will search the internet and list all of the social networks you are on instantly and all linked to your profile

So if I receive or have received a resume now i can see ALL the networks you are on.

It makes it very easy for me, as a hiring manager, to know what I need to know.

Also like your advice about "next boss is reading", many people need to also remember "current boss is reading

Great heads-up on the minuses of visibility on social networks. I'm active on about 10 social networks and I approach all of them as if my next boss is reading. Thanks for reinforcing that behavior.
